Did You Notice I Wasn'T There

When you went to our favorite place,
and you sat in your usual chair.
When you lifted your stemmed glass,
did you notice I wasn't there?

Did you furtively check the door;
look for my face across the room?
Did you surreptitiously search the air
for a hint of my perfume?

Did you feel a sudden chill
of loneliness and, yes, regret?
Did you wish with troubled heart
that you and I had never met?

Did you think, with a sudden start,
those very words I might have said?
Did it occur, now you're thinking of me,
you thought of only yourself instead?

Did you notice my eyes brimmed with tears?
Did they happen to be in your glance?
Did you realize I wasn't a game to be played
Like you play your games of chance?

You won't find me now in any room;
nor will my perfume fill the air.
You're your's alone, as it always was.
Did you notice I wasn't there?

A nice expression of the loneliness and pain, Ann, I have my share of footprints across my heart. Nicely penned my friend. Hugs, John

Dear Ann, this poem speaks of sadness, getting hurt, and of some people who never seem to notice how someone else is feeling. Your poetry is very true, and profound. You have spoken to my heart. Your rhyming is impeccable! Love and hugs, Dear Friend, take care ~ Mala

Dear Ann, how sad these words ring in my heart. Some people never seem to notice how invisible they make us feel. They only wake up when you are gone, very well written, Thankyou, God bless !

Such a melancholy feeling to this poem, also of unrequited love. The last verse is both so telling and very well written. John

I can just picture Elvis Presley responding with, "Are you lonesome tonight, do you miss me tonight ..." Aloha! Rico

HaHa, Rico! I do miss his mellow voice (elvis) but he just came so undone. Yeah, Are You Lonely Tonight fits :) Aloha.

This is a poem worthy to be well read. True it is on a subject well used. Yet you wrote it i an original way. Well done.
