Notes About The Poem

My newest poem is dedicated to Alison Smith.

despite fate

I was awakened
by a kookaburra’s screams
a crackling bushfire…
this parched yet amazing land
is forever in my dreams

As I read your poem our local Kookaburra family sang to the much needed rain. Their sound is more a raucous laugh than a scream though maybe it is a scream if you have not heard it before. Your beautifully evocative tanka: of kookaburra calls, crackling bushfire gives the opening real urgency, while the final lines hold deep affection for Australia’s harsh, unforgettable landscape. Not all of Australia is a harsh arid land. The center is a desert that comes alive with colour after rain. To the north east are luscious rainforests where the country is closer to the equator. To the south we get closer to the Antarctic so we have winter snow in the Blue Mountains. Maybe one day you can visit and I'll show you Australia.

Dear Alison, thank you for your sincere words. I know that Australia’s landscape is diverse; I enjoy watching nature documentaries on National Geographic. Regarding the kookaburra—you are right, its call sounds like a raucous laugh, but I needed a rhyme for the word "dreams." In Slovak, we have a word for that sound: "khekhot" (pronounced with the "kh" sound found in the Scottish "loch"). That "kh" consonant (a fricative) perfectly captures the sound of a loud, raspy laugh.
