The two-lane road stretches through a shimmering glaze to the horizon, passing smokestacks of mesas spewing clay and maize in vaporous mass. I hear the sibylline whisper of rain through emerald brush and serpentine hiss of slithering sand. The acrid smell permeates evergreen and purple sage, carries the aroma with fine dust. I point my thumb west, a prayer for a willing traveler to whisk me away from the cumulative downpour when the desert paint floods umber in the gullies.

Thanks for picking up this poetic hitch hiker along that two lane. Beautifully done....imagery, mystery, and color left to the readers imaginative excesses. Thanks for entering the contest

Your poem paints a vivid desert image - congrats on your win, Dale. I love the desert with its rocks, smells and hues; it's a very special place. Too bad I won't get to go this year.

Hi Dale.. Tonight, the mountain sky is clear. In a few hours the stars will tease me with their winks. The twilight is for your poem, and it's as enjoyable as the coming sunset!
