Notes About The Poem

Deja Vu

 Yesterday,
  I tuned into my local news channel;
          Wow, color me surprised...
  There was news about a shooting!
                     Today,
    The same news anchor reported
              About a child shot
    At some Baltimore street corner;
      Transported to shock trauma
        Where he tragically expired.
            Sad surprise graduates
                     To shock;
            A trauma to my system.
           Please, pardon that pun!
           How upsetting? A child...
     One foot out of the womb, gone.
                What the heck!?
                    Tomorrow,
           Oh I know...I just know...
      Another shooting will take place,
                      Even if
          It doesn't make the news.
               Sickening deja vu
      Piled atop another, and another!

I am afraid, that I cant agree with the premise that guns don't shoot people, its people that shoot people. If no one had guns, except getting shot with a bow and arrow, no one would get shot. In Australia our gun laws are not perfect. but on average since our laws in 1996 there have been NO mass shootings and 1 in 100,000 people a year die of gun shot wounds including police shootings suicide unintentional shots fired and homicide. Gun laws work. Keep up the fight. Your caring nature shines through in your poetry Edward, it is admired.
