Deities and Boogeymen
Religion is tempting:
but only if I can accept blind faith.
To some, God is a fantasy lie:
and yet, to others, He's the ultimate truth.
The shame and sham of organized religion:
as viewed through the cynical eye of hindsight,
has been exposed as a con.
Fanatics who claim to speak for God:
never adhere to the words they preach.
Instead, they embed God in dogma and rituals,
a testament to their persuasive power.
We call ourselves a God-fearing people:
and we have good reason to fear God.
Throughout history, His followers killed and persecuted
all who would not worship Him.
God's church sponsored the use of heinous torture,
including burning people alive, in His name; hallelujah!
And yet, some still fervently believe,
for, like all cultists:
they've been brainwashed to reject reason.
Unquestionable obedience, coupled with eternal punishment,
are traits shared by all omnipresent Gods.
The Bible bristles with examples of God's wrath,
from the great flood to the killing of Egypt's firstborn:
and yet, it's all justified in the name of love.
Blasphemy is the weapon leveled against
all who question the existence of Deities and boogeymen;
and dare start thinking for themselves.
