Notes About The Poem

“In and out of the back door I keep falling into the same hole my father dug decades ago.
But my mother left the front door open, and I must remember that some changes scatter forward.”

degaussing the alleyway

degaussing the alleyway

I heard you say my child would never
      here they come

the complex beaches
                   the child who counts
                                       the

backwards legos

the old womaning
             the skiffs
                       tomorrow's vacuum
                                       yesterdayed

the static radioed
              shake voice shak

down the alleyway
                 cited by a

dumpster that nevered itself

while the dog fed

             the neighbor

                         the key the mother

swallowed

     mother my child
     child my mother

the fruit flies like

                    the sour grapes

while the grapes

      fruit the flies

the calm sea

seaed the sailors

until the sailors

seaed the calm

as ducks bill

the teller for the bread unpicked

i never said she

sold the mortgage

                 to the pony

raced

past the pantry

               collapsed on the milkman

she nevered

the doorway shut

                the pantry neveredward

the milkman’s neverstruck the morning

                     tomorrow nevereborned

yesterday

police police police police
guard guard guard guard
ghost ghost ghost ghosted ghosting

the precinct ghosted the precinct

        till the apple peels

while hound hound hounds

hounding buffalo

buffalo buffalo buffaloed

hounding the girl

they haunt mindless

                    plain

                          plane

                                unplain

                                     tallening

the never

your child
the empty chair

waited beneathing

the dumpster

each pocket carried

its own never

the alleyway

nevered itself

unthed

into neverness

offed

you
not do
say

never nevered the never

until the never began nevering

Until the never began nevering. Just one example of some very original lines in this poem. So much creativity here. So cool how your words capture the essence of the picture

Hello Joe, thank you. I love that you read the poem as a place where imagination and reality blur; “left yet not quite gone” is exactly the liminal feeling I wanted to hold. Your short, puzzled lines mirror the poem’s own wobble, grateful you stayed with it. Blessings, Daniel

They say, dear Daniel, never say never, and I agree with that deeply, and I thought of that as I read this very impactful poem, that leaves a soul punch! Like...a deep piercing ache! Its never easy, reflecting, when trauma can be so haunting, still, sometimes when we are healing or when we heal, we tend to forget certain things, and remember some parts ~ a mother child relationship can be complex. I really love how you wrote "the calm sea the sailors until the sailors seaed the calm" brave wordplay! And also so much depth in this! Those unfinished lines, stories, thoughts, unexpressed, can echo forevermore! Your poem is not one of those traditional ones! But one that is so very unique, and the openness of the flow is catchy and gives a dramatic touch! Felt this ! Fave! Sending you light always my friend 🌙 💫

I’m glad the poem landed as a “soul punch” for you and that the wordplay, especially “the calm sea / the sailors until the sailors seaed the calm” caught your ear. Word play with some humor added, Daniel. Thank you for sharing this one with us. There must be a contest because I have seen another one with something similar in it. If so, this one reads like a good contender to me. Way to go. 👏⭐ Sara K.

Dear Sara Kendrick, thank you for spotting the humor in the wordplay. I appreciate you calling it a contender, although it is not for any contest, but, that encouragement matters. Glad the playful edges read as part of the poem’s voice for you. Blessings Daniel

Quite a creative piece of writing and wordplay going on here Daniel, and I kept having the urge to hit my screen with a shoe, (like we did back in the day) to help with degaussing lol! No it’s a really clever concept, with very deep surreal undertones going on, I love your quote too, it’s a poem in itself, cheers David

Hello David, love the shoe image, perfect for “degaussing” a stubborn screen. Thank you for calling the concept clever and for leaning into the surreal undertones; I’m also glad the quote felt like its own small poem to you. Many times I think maybe they should be a poem that stands on its on. Blessings, Daniel

Dear Paula Goldsmith, thank you for the kind read. I’m pleased the quote was memorable and that the piece felt powerful, your window‑opens note is a comforting way to hold the poem’s darker corners. Blessings, Daniel

Goshhh that endinggg!!! Absolutely left me breathless and speechless 😢😢❤️‍🩹 you've woven such a profound and vulnerable piece, dear Daniel, and I'm forever awestruck by your amusing techniques! The way you form your own styles and patterns, like your own unique signature! There's so much brilliance reflecting from this one, but also so many emotions, unspoken and buried. It's always such a pleasure reading your outstanding work ~ Sending you light and best wishes always ✨🌙🕊️💫✨
