Decisions Made That Brought Destiny

Now coming to three score years and ten
looking back on years now gone past
decisions made that brought destiny
then not knowing what would last

In leaving school cut off from friends
for I saw them as a bad influence
then became very much a loner
but later it proved good sense

During early 20s found pen friends
one in particular was Chicago Joan
exchanged letters and tapes we spoke
but never did meet, apart was grown

Music became my forever friend
tastes varied from Dory P to punk
every week watched the OGWT
whispering Bob sent me to bunk

So often then pondered on life
what's future hold for this me
my stutter could be my Achilles heel
but providence took me to a tree

My God showed His eye was set
to lead me back to His call
since birth been sovereign care
proving His destiny is never small

Poetry has now come on home
giving me words forever to own
all of this impossible way back when
Life seemed so eternally unknown

(Dory P was the American singer-songwriter Dory Previn.)

(OGWT was the late-night contemporary music show called 'Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC2 compared by Bob Harris who was called whispering Bob because of his low soft sounding voice.)

We all have our crosses to bear but when things are against me I always think of others who are worse off. Hope you're keeping well Gordon, not long back from Kos. Tom
