death of a loved one

once upon a so very long time ago he was told
that the biggest gift of love one can make is
to let someone go in peace and bless their future journey

he did not gift the separation to his former lover
she took it on her quest for independence
for in her path of self-discovery and freedom
there was no longer any place for his company
and it does not matter whether she was selfish
or followed the guidance of her Higher Power

there is still so much mutual love between the two of them
they have a deep soul connection and sexual desire
so much so that they do not rule out the chance
they might marry again like in some cheap trashy novel

he prayed for a harmonious fair just and peaceful dissolution
and the Gods seem to be looking kindly upon his request

an appointment for a lawyer has been scheduled
terms have been negotiated and mutually agreed upon
but every box packed for their individual moves hurts badly
every trinket considered kept or thrown in the trash is an ending
and while each act of decluttering offers a chance for moving on
the ending of their passionate journey together seems surreal

today he got a phone call from his childhood friend
whose son has committed suicide after long masked depression
an illness only too well known for the discarded husband
and for the first time in a very long while he can say
he would have rather have his own real problems
would not wish to swap plights in a million years
