Dearest Daughter

My dearest daughter, my ray of sunshine
You bring so much happiness to my life
But when I see you struck with pain
It pierces through me, like a knife

I wish I could always protect you
I wish I could keep you safe from harm
But sometimes you'll get sick or hurt
And I'll be the one to sound the alarm

I'll hold you close to my aching heart
And give you all the love I know
Hopefully that will be enough
And you'll recover as I watch you grow

Not every ailment is cause for worry
But I'll still panic in quiet distress
Praying that these times will pass
While trying my best not to stir and obsess

I'll hold your hand through every struggle
Or any time at your request
For as long as I have you in my life
I'll know what it's like to be truly blessed
