Dear Old Friend

I read your name in today's newspaper
while enjoying a morning cup of coffee.

How long ago did you sit with me on this patio,
basking in the warmth of a fresh summer sun; snapdragons blooming, nodding red, yellow, pink heads in agreement with a gentle breeze?

You are one of eleven listed in the cold print of a box titled death notices. The ten others are strangers whose friends must also grieve, as I do now.

A soft noise moves my eyes to the peak of the roof where pigeons roost.

One takes wing, as did you, leaving the others behind.
