Notes About The Poem

For the Hughes Turner Project Poetry Contest of Robert James Liguori/ inspiring song: Missed Your Name

________________________________________________________________

Dear John

I noticed him a week ago while riding on the train.
Angelic were his face and voice, but will we meet again?

So shy was he (a bit like me), but once we got conversing,
words between us flowed as if they’d never need rehearsing.

The train was slowing, so I asked his last name, but just then
he got shoved back, and in a rush, I had to exit then.

Chorus:
Dear John, dear John, so many things we said.
But nothing that we talked about has led
to any clues of what the young man did -
like where he worked. He’s not on any grid.
I’ll search on though this city is so vast.
I have to find sweet dear John at last.

I want to kick myself. A fool I was because
I’d been too shy to ask the guy what his number was.

My last name neither does he know. Oh my!
I’d felt a deep connection to that guy.

The way his eyes gazed into mine: divine.
His ruby lips enticed me like red wine!

Bridge:
I still cannot believe his name I did not hear.
Bedazzled by him, I was floating in another sphere.
Every day, regardless of the fact I need no train,
I’ll still be riding the same one in hopes we’ll meet again.

I never should have left that train, for now all that I find
is the memory of John. He just won’t leave my mind.

I never saw a wedding ring on the young man’s finger.
Does he, like me, even have thoughts of us that linger?

I keep envisioning our time together blow-by-blow.
Was it all a dream from which I can’t let go?

Chorus:
Dear John, dear John, so many things we said.
But nothing that we talked about has led
to any clues of what the young man did -
like where he worked. He’s not on any grid.
I’ll search on though this city is so vast.
I have to find sweet dear John at last.

ha, there actually was a John in my life, and now that I think of it, there were two. The first one was such a cutie. We were only 14 but he lived too far away and it just kind of fell apart. I've asked my friends what became of him. It's as if he dropped off the face of the earth.

Andrea, I do like poems about how we might develop an obsession since I am prone to that way of thinking myself. It makes me wonder what would happen if he was found. It's hard to know when to follow one's feelings and when to not. Should she have stayed on the train? We'll never know since time only goes forward. Interesting to think about. Smiles!

there was a pop song some time ago that was about this type of situation. Can't remember it now. Maybe he would have turned out to be a serial killer. haha. When I write for Robert, I just start feeling stories to write about. thanks for reading so many of my poems today, Duke. I appreciate it.

Yes, it would make for quite the tale, huh. Did you ever see the Tom Hank's movie Otto? He met his wife that way in the movie!

A symphony of love permeates all places, and there are experiences that we may overlook, such as the sweetness of passion. Andrea, this is a beautiful and heartfelt poem.

This reminds me of one or two similar encounters I've had over the years, including one or two close friendships that bloomed but then suddenly and unexpectedly - disappeared! A moving and fine piece of poetry dear Andrea. Kudos ~ Terrell

I would love for something like this to have happened to me, but it never did. Actually, my first boyfriend was named John. I have searched for him since internet became popular, just to sse what happened to him. Nobody in my home state knows what became of him. He actually had an angelic face too. I really wonder if he is still alive!
