'dear Granddaddy'
I shall finish this letter to granddaddy tonight,
I just cannot find the words that are right.
I wish to thank him for fighting in the war,
on the front line he stood, straight in sight.
I bet he saw the such violence and abhor,
but he knew exactly what America stood for.
"Granddaddy,
I wish I could’ve met you, granddaddy of mine-
I wonder, did I get my ginger hair from you?
My momma said you were utterly divine
and that I would have loved you too.”
little does she know...
(I already do)
(crumbles letter up)
This letter must be perfect so he can read
it from heaven where he lives in creed.
I keep rewriting, I know not the words to say,
but I am determined to finish this, indeed!
For wretched cancer took granddaddy away.
O, I hope he knows that momma’s okay.
"GUESS WHAT!
I got a new puppy in honor of you,
I named him Frankie, your name too!
I tug his ears, he slobbers on my face,
kisses from heaven I’d like to embrace.”
This is the final draft, it’s ready to be mailed,
but instead I go to his gravesite and nailed
my letter to a flower, hope he receives!
It’s full of questions and memories detailed,
for in my heart I know in me he believes.
This letter I wrote, I hope an angel retrieves.
"Farewell and be blessed, my dear granddaddy,
for one day you shall be alive again with me.
Love,
Jeremy"
