Daybreak
I woke this morning,
Tiptoed down the stairs,
Made my coffee,
And stepped outside into
The thick, breathless silence
That only fog can bring.
Grass and trees invisible,
Not a single birdsong,
No dripping from the trees,
Not a whisper of wind,
No sound at all.
Mesmerized by the
Completeness of the quiet,
I sat on the steps
And drank my coffee.
Slowly, slowly, the mists
Began to swirl and thin
And turn to a golden haze
Until the sun broke through,
And the birds began to sing.
The day had begun.
