Darkness

We touch the darkness
and the darkness touches us;
the day lights our way,
the night scatters us all.
Darkness invades our world -
our safety, our security, and our sanity;
the thoughts we have change,
the desires we feel change.
Darkness is the savage beast
enveloping everything in its path;
a new world opens itself to us...
shadows lengthen,
imaginations broaden,
fear increases.
Horizons lower as the night approaches,
what seems touchable is now
more distant in the darkness,
what seems logical
now fades in the dark;
the heart beats faster,
the steps are lighter,
the pace quickens.
Yet, darkness is but one of two -
its presence like its absence
cannot exist without the other,
without darkness... light will never be.

Yes, our fears do linger in the darkness - and, sometimes, I think, bring on the darkness. Nice write George. Good luck in the contest.
