Darkness

I am not afraid
of the dark
not exactly

I sleep with
my nightlight on

But I'm not
afraid of the darkness

I am afraid
of being alone

so I leave the light
on

to reassure me
that I am here
and my family is down the hall
and my cat is curled up
next to me

I don't think
that anybody
is afraid of the dark itself
just the things
that they imagine
happen

while immersed in the deep inky blackness
