Notes About The Poem

10/3/2025 for Dazzle Of The Deep Poetry Contest sponsored by Gregory Richard Barden

Dark Matter Giggles

As I hide from you in the dark,
I extinguish my little spark.
Your dog looks to the moon to bark,
but my place is not lunar -
ditch your radio tuner.

I'm in the distant universe,
ain't red-shifted - quite the reverse.
I have no photons to disperse.
You wanna ask, "Where you been?"
Why not ask Vera Rubin?

Na na na na na, can't find me,
no matter how you try to see,
with yer telescope, hee hee hee.
Wanna try using Hubble?
g'head, get on the double!

To scientists, I fascinate
and positively captivate.
My hobby is to gravitate
from the place I'm residing
in space where I am hiding.

Are you still wond'ring who I am?
If, 'scuse my French, you give a dam*,
without this guy, dear sir or ma'am,
the galaxies would splatter,
Sincerely Yours, Dark Matter.

Dear David, as soon as I read your great title I knew I was in for a sweet treat! :)) I adored Dark Matter’s snarky narration.. So creative, my poet friend. Congratulations for your success in Gregory’s contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thanks, Susan, haha, I did give that dark matter a bit of an attitude - lol!

O, I just love this, David. Instant FAVE for me. As an avid reader of Scientific American and Science News --- who doesn't comprehend anything, of course --- I really appreciate this one. ~ Mr. Wiz Erred

haha, that's interesting - that also describes me to a T. I also like to read those two magazines and never understand anything. This poem shows the level of sophistication I've reached in my understanding of dark matter.

Thanks, Sara. Neither here nor there, but "giggles" in the title was meant as a verb, but now I see that it could also work as a noun.

I totally admire your erudite scientific surprise in the form of a poem. My money is on it that you own your own telescope.

Thanks! I did buy two telescopes when my son was small, and my family had one when I was a kid. I was 10 years old at the time of the first moon landing, and so that kind of got me fascinated with space.
