Dark and Lovely

I am beautiful,
But they scowl me
Because the sun has looked upon me.
Mother's sons are angry with me
Because I am black.
They make me keep their vineyards,
But my own I have not kept;
Yet, wisdom looks upon me
Even though I'm dark; I'm lovely
And now I am great.
I excel more than those before me
Because wisdom remains in me-
Riches, honor and fame follow me.
Every good thing is mine
With no added sorrow,
Except for the increase of knowledge
Though there is nothing new,
I increase by lore-
And I am black!
Mother's sons are still angry with me,
But I am king
And I am wise;
So, they can't slight me
Even though I'm dark; I'm lovely.
