Daphne Odora

Daphne Odora Dainty Daphne costumed in purest white Through winter’s darkest days shares her blooms Wears a satin gown to the ice moon’s delight Small nosegay clusters share intoxicated perfume. Daphne sings in winterfests of raucous snows Evergreen, her smiles warm winterbound showers January’s merry child surely knows She lifts the heart through every frigid hour. 8-26-22 Contest: Eight Lines of Rhyme - Your Favorite Flower Sponsor: Tania Kitchin

Michael, I am so glad you enjoyed my poem on the Daphne! I always look forward to the time when Daphne blooms at the coldest, darkest time of the year. I have two plants at our front door and watch every day as the buds swell then open with glorious perfume and beautiful flowers to scent the front door with sheer delight. Thank you for your lovely feedback a blessing! Sending you many blessings!

Hi Deb! Seems I have created a woman, or plant, of mystery! My grandmother introduced me to this beautiful flower and I have had a love affair with it since childhood. I know it grows in southern Australia and in temperate climates in the US. It came from China. I would imagine that It would grow all over the UK. I am thrilled I was able to introduce you to this amazing little winter wonder. Thank you for your beautiful feedback. Hope you are able to find a Daphne. Blessings!

Thank you so much Belle! Not many people know about Daphne Odora. I look forward to January because in the depth of winter my Daphne bloom at the front door filling the house with the most amazing perfume. They can be a little finicky but they are always worth the effort. Do you have Daphne? Blessings of the season to you!

Sam, to begin with I had Daphne Odora down as an opera singer in your poem and not a compact evergreen shrub with leathery, dark green leaves and terminal umbels of very fragrant, deep pink and white flowers from late winter to early spring, followed by red fruit :) Well, the flower does sing in your poem, which, I have to say, is great use of personification. Love it! Cheers - Gary

Gary, the vision of your opera singer brought a big :) to my face. Now that I think about it, Daphne Odora does sound like a stage personality! My grandmother introduced me to Daphne and I loved this brave little winter flower ever since. Had to write about Daphne! Thanks ever so much for your delightful feedback. So glad you got to know Daphne! Cheers!
