Daphne Odora

Daphne Odora 

Dainty Daphne costumed in purest white
Through winter’s darkest days shares her blooms
Wears a satin gown to the ice moon’s delight
Small nosegay clusters share intoxicated perfume.

Daphne sings in winterfests of raucous snows
Evergreen, her smiles warm winterbound showers
January’s merry child surely knows
She lifts the heart through every frigid hour.

My grandmother introduced me to this beautiful flower and I have had a love affair with it since childhood. I know it grows in southern Australia and in temperate climates in the US. Not many people know about Daphne Odora. I look forward to January because in the depth of winter my Daphne bloom at the front door filling the house with the most amazing perfume. Gary Radice August 26, 2022 at 5:53 AM Sam, to begin with I had Daphne Odora down as an opera singer in your poem and not a compact evergreen shrub with leathery, dark green leaves and terminal umbels of very fragrant, deep pink and white flowers from late winter to early spring, followed by red fruit :) Well, the flower does sing in your poem, which, I have to say, is great use of personification.
