DANCING GOODBYE

(First two lines spoken)
The point of no return, as I took your hand
Out on the dance floor, would I be your man?

I took a chance, told you how I feel
Laid it all down, no cards to conceal
This wasn’t the plan—meant to dance slow
But holdin’ you close, girl, I had to know

I let the truth fall from my lips
Hopin' love would catch the slips

I took a chance, let my secrets fly
Your eyes said it all—we're dancin’ goodbye
This wasn’t the dream when I said, "I love you"
I pictured you smiling, sayin’, "I love you too"

You're in my arms, and I’ve no regrets
We still got this song—it’s not over yet
So I close my eyes, dream sweet romance
Time stands still... and I’m glad I took a chance

Maybe someday, you'll think of this night
How the stars leaned in, how the world felt right
But if all I get is this final dance
I'll still be thankful I took that chance

I took a chance, let my heart be true
Now I’m just dancin’ the last steps with you
You're not sayin' much, but your silence is loud
We're swayin' through goodbye in the arms of the crowd

Yeah, I took a chance, now the moment’s past
But for one slow song… I held love at last
It wasn’t forever—but girl, it was real
I took a chance… and I learned how love feels

Note: I wanted to write a little song about a guy who took a chance, made himself vulnerable, telling a girl how he feels about her... and without a word being spoken he knows they are dancing goodbye. And yet, he can live in the now and just for the moment.. focus on the girl in his arms!

Lyric Man, Thank you for capturing risk so well. :) It echoes Tennyson. Sadly, wallflowers never take the chance to become something else.

I like the way you wrote this poem. It is honest, true and clear. Reminds us all that we won't get anywhere unless we take a chance.

Enjoying the moment instead of focusing on the fact that it will end. I love it!!! It's wonderful that the heartache didn't ruin the moment.

Taking a chance always come with risk. I'm reminded of the saying, tis better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all. A very well written piece in my humble opinion.

I appreciate comment on the tension in this poem. I agree, lovely...'song not over yet' . Hold on to joy no matter how temporary. Thanks for visiting me.

Lovely and bittersweet, Lyric Man. Reminds me a little of Garth Brooks's "The Dance." Janice
