Dancing for Rain

It is impossible to see the top of my roof
standing here by this sapling in the sun.
This afternoon I am here by this bird-
house waiting for woodland rain.
And, will my roof leak -- a roof
in need of repair leaking cracks of sun
and moonlight? What of this bird-
house on pole -- will it survive a rain?
Will a fierce wind rattle our roof?
Following wind, will a fierce sun
scorch our porch? I consider the bird
needing a home shelter in rain.
This carefree bird sits atop my roof
in sunshine dancing for rain.

The circling repetitions of roof, sun, bird, and rain give this poem a quiet, incantatory movement, beautifully echoing its title. I love how the ordinary birdhouse and a vulnerable roof open into larger thoughts about shelter, weather, and hope. The final image of the bird dancing in sunshine for rain feels both carefree and gently poignant.

Thank you, Alison, for your generous review of my poem. There must be a name for this form and I have used it alot. It gives me the sense of "stream of consciousness" in that you know that a particular word has to be at the end of the line... so you "write to it." And you'll note that the lines should be approximately the same length, uniform. It's fun to work with. Moon Harp
