Cygnus Olor

Chaste and more graceful Than the white canvassed Dhow: Reclines sweet Nefertiti Upon a Blue Nile breeze. Fabled entity more whiter Than the purest white snow That thickly blankets And folds over the wide Pyrenees. Dipped is thy beak Into a harvesters August sunset; A Bohun proper, Gorged and chained with a crown; Tipped Argent quills Thus scrawl across royal warrants: Plodding, punctilious creature - Of high born renown! Proudly thy trumpet Lancastrian ascension, Emblazoned on a Heraldic shield; Pomp and indignation Paddling alongside contemptuous scorn; Sinuous neck of Serpentine undulations Tensioned as if a Longbow - On whose plaited strings The sturdy Yeomans Bodkins were drawn! And did Columbines mask Ever hold such indignant eyes For whose feathered heart The diligent cob did attend? His sedulous efforts To court within impassioned grunts When intertwining throats Do abouts and lovingly wend. O, Cygnus olor! En monde bosse - glittering Dunstable jewel; Pen and immortal verse Chart beside heavens gilded streams. For under old mariners discarded stars And above silvered byways: Whoop the beat of dusted wings Inside slumbering clouds wandering dreams.

I too have lived a solitary life, all my adult life, and although I have missed out on the most important things life can offer a body...because of this, I, perhaps, sometimes, see some things in a slightly different light. This is my favourite poem. One day a giant old Pen arrived at my door...she was starving and exhausted. I fed her all winter and made her comfortable...when she died I was inconsolable! I buried her on the island of the lake opposite under an old silver ash. She was my friend. May God bless and protect her...for her immortal, whooping wings forever beat under eternal skies now. john

Hi, Keith. I have to confess "Cygnus olor" is my favourite poem. I do not truly know why exactly but perhaps it is for several reasons. I like the compactness of it, the punchy feel it imparts, its directness. It does not dither or muddle about...unlike most of my poetry. There is something grand about the subject but at the same time it imparts a feeling of sadness and melancholy. I am glad you like the poem, Keith...I truly am. My very best wishes and regards to you my friend! :) john

This is simply BRILLIANT Robert! I must confess (out of sheer ignorance) to look up your title phrase... the mute swan, I see. What a prodigious vocabulary you possess my friend. Splendidly written with rhyming and a smooth cadence. BRAVO Sir! Best wishes, Keith

Wow awesome how u have compared the cygnus to Queen Nefertiti and the Nile which personally to me adds a special flavor to the poem. Yor diction was fabulous too. I have an unpostd one relating to cleopatra. I admire those exotic white swans. Kudos. Great to read frm u again. I do hope u read my latest too.

Hello, S. The poem is about a female mute swan. I live alone in a caravan on the the side of a wooded ridge next to a series of small lakes. One day an old lone female mute swan turned up; She was very hungry...I fed her. She stayed with me for several years. On her death i was heartbroken! I buried her where I found her: Under a Silver Birch tree on a small island. Her immortal soul has flown now. This is my humble tribute to my true friend. I hope she is finally reunited with her own kind. my best regards! :) john

John, this is an excellent poetical tribute to the mute swan. There was a time when its numbers were dwindling, but seems like the situation is not too bad now. I have seen them in England and have been struck by the power of their take-off. Top marks to a deserving poem. // paul

Paul, always a pleasure to see you visiting. Yes, the Mute swan truly is a magnificent bird! There is some dispute but the Mute swan is generally regarded as the heaviest flying bird in the world. It is one of natures most inspiring spectacles: The colossal and laboured effort that is required just for this magnificent creature to take to the air...truly breathtaking!! It moves me every time. My very best regards to you, Paul! :) john

G'day John... a fine poem as a tribute to a wonderful bird. Down under we have a black swan which doesn't appear to have the same respect as a white swan does even though, they too are graceful - thank you for this fine poem John - Lindsay

This is utterly stunning, John! I always enjoy reading your page... wow...I love how you weave her winged grace with comparisons of particular names. It brings out the beauty of this bird magically and dreamily. "Chaste and more graceful Than the white canvassed Dhow: Reclines sweet Nefertiti Upon a Blue Nile breeze." I love how you take us there, and treat her with the majestic expressions he deserves. Always, Laura

Hi, Laura. Yes there is something magical about a swan. They are certainly a breed apart! The most outstanding bird taking off in flight you ever will see. The way they power along before dragging themselves up into the air with big whooping beats of those magnificent wings is simply breathtaking - An absolute joy to see!
Date: 7/13/2015 10:38:00 PM
john, I had to google to be sure it was swan. I seemed to remember cygnus meant swan and you describe them so super elegantly, I imagine they are like a mythical creature!! I swear, you could take a telephone book and make it read like poetry!!
