They rise up before me, marbled stones like the stars are embracing the evening, while they shatter the heart Scattered fields, vast and somber, keeping silent the valiant who have fallen so bravely, while forsaking the cost Many names are forgotten, and some have been lost New crosses still growing from the damp grass below me I have lost count, as my eyes seek horizons Reflecting on lives of the soldiers, unknown Deeply I'm falling without knowing how far Into the depths of the fields that have drawn me Into reflection and asking the questions That are tossed to the sky, without answers to why My eyes can't believe all the sadness before me I have lost count and my heart drowns in sorrow Searching for reason, seeking answers, unknown

Many unanswered question come to mind when we stand in any cemetery. But, especially near a grave with no name, no reason given for their death... This is a very moving poem that stirs many emotions. The imagery really takes the reader there... Congrats on a great win, Carrie!

Carrie, what a tribute to the fallen souls, known and unknown, who have sacrificed for us, and how much each one these crosses represent -- a life cut too short with dreams unfulfilled and a family with broken hearts. Congratulations in receiving the fine placement you deserve. Fav +7, Hugs, Sandra

Some poems just leave with no words... This is one of them : ) I think "my eyes can't believe all the sadness" says it all. Beautifully sad Carrie

This is a very poignant and soulful poem, Carrie. Most do not fully realize the great sacrifice these valiant soldiers have made to protect their country's freedom. A 7 !
