Craziest Time In the Inlet
A true story:
Boarded our boat, four of us — one was Gilligan. Map in hand, did we understand? Enough to sail to the jewelry store! Ahh...a ceramic necklace and matching earrings ~ black and white heaven of St. Maarten. Sleepy eateries closed.
quarter of orleans
weather’s grand, fair seas ahead
confident tourists
We spy a beach on the Caribbean sea side of the inlet. We’ve been warned, but Gilligan decides to bilk the wild tides as Maryann reins him in. Gilligan as a teen or in midlife does crazy things.
waves lolita tongue
the fool’s gold of confidence
— wisdom of his wife
The captain strolls the beach looking for a spelunking opportunity — ahem...alas, he runs back when he spies a couple having cake by the ocean and a predator on the cliff ogling.
intercourse of beach
tourist must not get involved —
someone else’s cake
Back in the boat, motor crooning, destination the pier. We are within range.
motor’s sputtering
all eyes are on land and sea
exacting the sport
The first mate, rope in hand, jumps, misses the pier, heads south into the deep. Laugh cut short…mother will kill me if anything happens to him. He bounds backwards onto the boat, dripping, a waterlogged cell.
four of us in deep
only one fell overboard
gilligan’s all wet
His Christmas gift, that year reads: if you can read this, pull me back in the boat.
