Countless Years

-------------------------------------

I've been here for countless years,
sought when fertile Earth required
embers got from barren peers
I brought light and life transpired

Old before the lizards woke,
I've been here for countless years,
told in tongues when apes first spoke,
scrawled on walls their dung besmears

Now Earth's thinning atmosphere's
showing damage from her past
I've been here for countless years,
I won't go until her last

With her number soon expired,
so my slumber also nears
I am strong but I am tired...
I've been here for countless years
