Convince Me

Convince me I am wrong to assume
You only mean for me the best,
For I am prone to believe your words
In them your intentions seem manifest.

Holding feelings very close to my chest
Your compliments inspire me to excel,
Yet sometimes I sense vainglorious praise
And an insincere sappiness, I can’t tell.

Convince me I am right to presume
You only mean for me the best,
And I shall continue to receive your words
Believing your intentions in them manifest.

"vainglorious praise" - what? Oh my! I am running to my dictionary now!

That's an old adjective that just cropped into my head, Caren, and I'm not sure it was appropriate...but the syllables worked! (chuckling) I've been writing stuff recently that I don't where it comes from.

Wisely observed, Milt but judge not their guilt, for as life play does enact, we need not react

Ah, but sometimes we simply cannot keep from reacting. It's called human nature.

wow, this is certainly one of those texts that force us to reflect... dealing with these very subjective nuances of thought is something that requires the dexterity that only Milton has... on the other hand, it is a trap for the unwary whose praise is not based on sincerity... but come on: congratulations Milton, excellent and deeply engineered poem, my friend.

Thank you so much, Marco. I'm not sure the "congratulations" is warranted, but I'll take it! Your thoughts and comments are always so appreciated.

Indeed, I do. However, many times I am not sure those people who communicate with me are telling me their honest feelings. I assume everyone is, but how can one be sure?
