Consumed
Dare I speak of lessons
stretched long in history
too often pushed aside,
lost to news and media coverage
swept away by some newer tragedy
more apparent, less transparent,
more rampant than recognized.
How do we then see ourselves as people
with the anger and the hate held in check
then bursting forth exploding
to consume any peace and love?
Dare we try, one more time
to erase the past and change the future
to become better than the dream
to rise, to stop accepting the unacceptable
and to cleanse our children
from all our inept prejudices
by which we have become consumed.
