Consternation
the machines chop up the sidewalk with no regard to preservation
Nothing is salvaged, the city wants new, and has found money
The mayor and town council authorized this on Friday, two days ago
Whoa! A foreman halts destruction, until something can be examined.
It is a skull and a breastbone; white and gleaming, hidden for years
under this thick concrete sidewalk. There is a fast discussion. If they
admit the discovery, their money is going to be pushed back for months
If they do not, what harm? These bones belong to a family long time
buried probably. Two men stand staring at this grave.
