Confession

You said you’ll never marry me
Said you meant it like a fear
I said don’t get it out there
We are what we see and hear
You didn’t say it as a test
You said it with your chest
I could see it in your eyes, some days you wish you loved me less
And you cried into my hair, said it wasn’t fair
I cried into your chest, defeated, I was a mess
I said fess up, every time, and we’ll suffer together
Whisper those same words gently, and I swear I’ll kiss it better
Suffering imaginary loss as a team
Sweaty palms holding broken dreams
Saying what we mean
Intertwine our pain, so that if they pull us a part
Some pieces will stay together
You say we’ll battle the weather, like it weighs a feather
You got something off your back, about what we lack
It switched onto me, like an attack
Fact, what is that against feeling?
Black, my opened eyes see for nought
And you asked, if I knew it all
Foreseen the odds from the beginning
Why did I go all in? and I hope you didn’t mean it
You followed ‘What a stupid question’
‘You led with your heart, not your mind’
Did you think I went in blind?
I said ‘I couldn’t help it’
Like we couldn’t help it now
It’s an ache that keeps on aching, it is our background sound
It’s the thought that keeps on taking, and tainting
I’ve been spooning and faking
Future talks let out at night, kept them in the basement
Face it, didn’t want to ruin something beautiful
Full of love, full of hope
We anticipate heartbreak hand in hand
Kiss deeply, whisper ‘forever’
Brace for impact, tongue in tongue
‘You’ll always be my best friend’

Because you don’t have to know when and you don’t have to know how
You just have to close your eyes
And say the quiet part out loud
