Completely Under His Spell

She was joyfully herself, delightful
Until she met Mr. Have My Way. She was sixteen, he was twenty-three.
She started changing slowly, we did not even see it at first.
When we did, it was too late.
She was completely under his spell,
A spell none of us could understand, or help her dissolve.
She was the first one of our set married, moved to a farm, in another state.
We wanted to visit, kept inviting ourselves, but were never encouraged.
Found out later her own family was not allowed to visit them.
Her sisters tried to break through, but to no avail.
She was isolated for years.
He answered the door and the phone.
Claimed she did not want to see them, did not want company.
They sent cards and letters that were returned.
They were alarmed, but did not have any proof of wrong-doing.
She passed away slowly, dying a bit more each day, under his jurisdiction.
I saw her in the store once at Christmas time
when she glanced up and caught my eye for a brief moment.
He noticed, and led her away like the docile puppy she had become, his puppy.
It had been twelve years since I had seen that joyful, happy, excited teenager.
I never saw her again, and neither did her family.
She passed of cancer in her fifties.
There was no funeral.

I am so glad they are ancient.
