Comfort for the Living

“You will be missed.”
I will, but for how long?
“I can't live without you.”
You will, you'll go on day by day, slowly forgetting me and moving on
“You were so loved.”
You say “loved” in past tense because you can no longer love me
“I pray to god to keep you company up there.”
I'm actually below you, but that’s a conversation for later
“Please wait for me.”
	Where else would I go?
“They would want me to move on.”
Who told you that? They lied…

This is a stark, affecting free-verse piece that turns familiar funeral consolations inside out. The alternating quoted voices and indented replies create a clean call-and-response structure, exposing the gap between what mourners say and what the dead—or the imagined dead—might bitterly hear. Its restrained presentation lets the dark humour land sharply, especially in “I’m actually below you,” while the final line leaves a chilling, unresolved sense of grief’s possessiveness.
