Come Play With Me

Come play with me, I said to Mama
What's the game, Mama said
Duck, duck, goose: Come, Mama, play
I'm busy now, honey -- and my heart bled

Come play with me, I said to Papa
What's the game, Papa said
Running bases: Come, Papa, play
I've work to do, son -- and my heart bled

Come play with me, I said to Sister
What's the game, Sister said
Concentration: Come, Sister, play
I've got a date, sorry -- and my heart bled

Come play with me, I said to Fido
He wagged his tail, dissolved my dread
Fido was oh-so-happy to play
Heart once more whole, I patted his head

Gershon, congratulations on your Honorable Mention Win in the Invitation to Play contest. I enjoyed the narrator's desire to play and the happy conclusion of his best friend. There were so many good poems that it got down to a just thanks standoff.

so many parents are guilty of this and don't realize how easily a child's heart can be hurt...dogs are always there to comfort us when we are hurting and love the time together! I love this write just as much :) hugs

You are so right: Kids zero in on the messages their parents send them. So many stories about that. (Maybe I'll narrate one soon in a poem; it knocked me for a loop)… Thank you so much for all of your wonderful, insightful comments, Sandra. Greatly appreciated! Best wishes, Gershon

Oh, Gershon, your tender poem has reached the depths of my heart in so many ways. This piece is beautifully expressive and nothing says unconditional love better that a big pair of ‘Fido eyes’ and a wagging tail. I loved the spirit of this write. Warmest wishes always my wonderful friend.. ~Susan

Oh, I so enjoyed the tune of poetic longing you’ve so eloquently penned, my endearing friend.. :) unfortunately, my real life, at times, just gets way too busy to have time for my poetic life. But, it’s so nice to know I was missed.. and I missed you and being here as well :))

And I was thinking before I viewed your comments of perhaps posting a poem something like this: Oh where, oh where has my Susan gone? // Oh where, oh where can she be? --- Thank you so much for rendering my notion entirely unnecessary... Oh, and I'm glad you like this simple, unadorned poem. Your support is precious and priceless, my friend. Au revoir, and into the night! ~ Fido's Best Friend
