Closer to My Close
“Have you ever seen
a human heart?
It looks like a fist
wrapped in blood.”
It does, and I have fallen
deeper in love
with the acting
of Clive Owen.
I will learn to live
closer to my close
with myself and those
I welcome
into my intimacy:
the teachers I laugh with,
the sisters whom I cannot
comfort other than
through words
in a flat phone call.
The film ‘Closer’
unnerved me
in college,
before I knew
the primal nature
of romantic relationships.
The tearing dynamics
of cutting conversations
were relentless,
and right in front of me.
I am not Margaret.
I am no longer
“grieving over
Goldengrove
unleaving.”
I don’t come to
all sights “colder”
but it is not
Jennifer
I “mourn for.”
