Notes About The Poem

*“chrysalis”: from Greek khrusallis, from khrusos “gold” (because of the gold color or metallic sheen of some pupae, an insect transitional stage leading to adult butterfly or moth). Hence, the sonnet's title, “Chrysalis,” symbolizes transformation and metamorphosis of the speaker (by “Rose,” the object of his gratitude and love).

Chrysalis

How you've redeemed me. Let me so declare!
     After despair's depths forced me to expire,  
     you gave me a new spirit of desire;   
and then, still more, you breathed life-giving air 
into my soul; and gave me a will to dare. 
     Since you, I strive to reach ever higher, 
     and live once more with hope that feels like fire;
for you've beheld me as precious and rare.
And therefore my heart now is made of gold,
     which beats for you for all time and always.
You've graced me in ways high-born and untold,  
     dear Rose, so I offer now thanks and praise, 
and prize too great for you to count or behold.
     For I love you to the end of my days.
