Christmas Mourning
Some Christmas celebrants’ wide smiles
and joy displayed around their trees
and at huge feasts that some drive miles
to share imply they’re trouble free.
In early morning hours, tears
will flow for those who won’t be there
to open presents, echo “Cheers,”
and share the day with those who care.
This flood of grief must cease before
the kids wake up and want to see
what Santa brought. When they are more
mature, they’ll learn how life can be.
They’ll realize that grief hits hard
this time of year, that loss and past
mistakes can haunt and leave them scarred,
for childhood innocence can’t last.
