Christmas Lights
Today I saw a commercial;
They were selling Christmas lights,
And I thought of the darkness of the world
Being pierced by countless points of light
And I thought there was something hopeful
About their unnatural festive glow
Against the cold, unfeeling dark
And I thought they shone rather brightly,
As if to prove that they existed
In defiance of all of nature
And I thought that if we too could learn
To shine as bright as they did then,
Resigning ourselves to each small moment,
Perhaps the night would pass away forever.
