Children, Children

Crawling about the floor and following always
Happily at my doting heels
Infused me so much with delight, making me
Labor with change of diaper or bottle, and we
Dribbling smiles, found no other space
Revered as well as our shared company
Emerging from cocoon though, feather sprung
Native floor and native heart clutch rags of longing

Cradle void the arms long to lullaby you still
Hugged against the fresh scent of powder
Infant days I longed to pass I crave anew
Listening for the lilt and lint of litany that drives
Devotion when I suck the snot away, and
Rinse tiredness to refresh my care, and so heal
Every sickness that fretted you. I would
Nurture you still, and fill this empty nest I detest
