Children Born In September

children born in fall
have time before cold wind comes in
to see the excellent blue sky
and feel warm air
on newborn skin
take them out in the temperate sun
to smell the under leaf scent
lingering behind
and see the softening colors

As a new mother I could get out in fall
and walk the wee one as he screamed
and then his screaming brother joined us
for more excellent screaming adventures
at least outside there were some things to
distract
and we would walk until dusk and exhaustion
took us inside
for warm tea
warm milk
warm bath
and sleep
(please)
(just sleep)
