Changing Tides
Listen to the man because he is always right
Don’t you dare talk back or put up a fight
Hear his voice and hear him out
But you little woman have no voice…even if you shout
Sit on the floor and serve me please
Then bath, clothe and feed the kids
Keep the house in order and family in line
Thank you for that my dutiful wife
I, the man, big and strong
Will provide for my family come summer or storm
I will head and protect them because that’s how it is
It’s the status quo; she listens and I lead
However, we are finding out that change is inevitable
And this time the tables are turning on our culture, roles and people
Globalisation, westernisation and human rights
Has put our archaic norms in a losing fight
My children and I now have different meanings of life
And our beliefs and values are no longer in line
The winds of reform are definitely in our homes
Where it will take us…nobody knows.
