Caution

Expanse of dark blue
Channels fill like valves of the heart

I’m a little afraid
     wading through the deep
          toes dragging in silt

I begin to pray
with words more breath than voice
          verbalized with a tributary language

Want to turn back, but
     sludge sucked up with
          current clouds bravado

Smooth surface
     reflects the glow of truth
disguised by the dark slick of night

Momentum imagined paralyzed
     Courage clothed only in fictional
strength lost to the spin of tides

This visible heart, compared to leaves
     saturated and closely resembling dead
animals bloated with want of yesterday
