Psychic energy that is misspent on an idea, perhaps an object, and often on a person, is referred to as a cathexis, an action to satisfy an urge or need that can worsen. In his explored psychoanalytical theory of personality disorders, Sigmund Freud theorized about this rather unhealthy drive in which a life can be hindered or destroyed. He believed that psychic energy is found within the id, the ego, and the superego The id directs a person's most basic needs, deviating reality, but just how far will it go? To satisfy the fanatic compulsion it craves it can throw someone's energy into disarray, This personality disorder is totally cognitive, borderline psychotic, leading the mind astray. Ego cathexis is a median nature of narcissism causing a break down of stored up emotions. Anger may occur, irrational to say the least, often filling the brain with devious notions. Heya Lin, Irrational fixations are definitely a very real reality, I’d put them up there with denial and paranoia, to mention a few, and can become very dangerous indeed if not treated properly, I like the way you’ve analytically weaved this poem almost into a textbook style on psychosis, it’s a fascinating if not troubling subject to write about, excellently penned, great one for the contest, cheers David

Morning David. Edward's offer of it as a theme grabbed my attention because I'd never heard of such extreme cases of paranoia. Thanks for your thoughts on the subject and as ever, your great comments.

You are just a wealth of knowledge!. I really enjoyed the tutorial Lin. I believe I know a few who old Sigmund would have loved to have met:)

lol Danny, I'm not a wealth of knowledge, but thank you. It only requires a little reading to discern things I didn't know, and things that explain the behavior of some humans. Sigmund had the wealth of knowledge, but there are a few here abouts who would need a much deeper psychiatric analysis. Thanks for reading me.

as for me...I'll settle for being just "a bit off", "slightly out of touch with reality", "able to leap tall thoughts in a single bound" and....oh yeah, "I ain't giving back the drum"

John, you have no cause for concern about being analyzed with cathexis. I've read you often enough to realize you can leap tall thoughts in a single poem and you already are slightly out of touch with reality ~ all things a poet must possess. Never allow anyone to take your drum or your pen. Thanks for your humorous comments. ;-)
