Cast You Out

within the shutters of dusk
as traces of crimson lay hidden
against the ebony skies of night
 amethyst and turquoise bursts
exploded above then fell
in splashes of ash
as our eyes met

there were no words
that fell the between us
just sparks as they trailed
like lost stars

the music faded
beneath the strums
of the ocean
and beats of hearts
in rhythmic pulses
where love once lingered

yet you linger
only in memory
                                        a kiss in parting
                                 day old beer and cigarettes
                                       as my lips drew back

we held hands
as we walked
along the splintered path
echoes of laughter
behind our steps
as we walked along
the edges of life

your hands
caress less now
as memory recalls

                                    the strength of your hands
in hues of purple and blue
                                         beneath opaque tears

we no longer walk
together on a path
i walk alone
as echoes
on sidewalks
lash back
in quickened steps

                                      my mind bleeds nightmares
                                  deep within this hidden pain
                                               memory remains

i cast you out
    over and
     over again
       ....again

Keep knowing that you are stronger than you know. Truly. This is an excellent poem, if sad, but fully of emotions, felt to the core. Ann

" the strength of your hands in hues of purple and blue beneath opaque tears" - so well done; shows the reader what was happening.

Thank you Caren...one can never see a wolf beneath the layers of sheep clothing until it's often too late... hugs :)

- When the stars fade ... and love fades little by little .. we try to light new stars ... but to no explosion ... back are just memories ... and we think: "If only" ... " maybe "... but, sometimes it's better to go alone - A beautiful and sensitive poem, Sandra :) - Good luck in the contest :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

Thank you Anne-Lise...sometimes the magic is there in the beginning because they mask who they really are, and we are totally involved with the wrong person.... hugs :)

I became lost in the words following that lonely path you have created here. What a wonderful, though a bit sad, journey I have just been on. This was fantastic. Best wishes in the contest

This one really hit me hard in the solar plexus, Sandy. You have penned a devastating tale, and as Richard noted, the formatting really heightens its poignancy. Best of luck in the contest. Warm wishes, Gershon

Lots of good writing, always you are so good. But i liked the first really long piece of free verse and it felt "ended" at that last line of it (for me anyway) I just know this will do well in the contest.

Painful memories are hard to erase and only time helps them fade. Like how you mixed different forms. Good luck. Tom
