Carol
Carol
It took her seven weeks to die
49 days
1176 hours
2000 miles too and fro'
In sun and rain
The same road each day
With autumn leaves weaving
A carpet of many colours.
An occasional smile, but not of true recognition.
49 cups of latte while thinking,
Watching people and the world pass by.
Listening to patients groaning,
Nurses and doctors with strange accents,
Machines at every turn,
Names over each bed
Badly written.
The last day she seemed the same.
We left her side not knowing.
A fond farewell
"We'll see you tomorrow"
But tomorrow never came.
No wave,
No smile,
Just a clinical phone call.
