Carefully Irrational

My angel wears no halo Resembling, more closely, a crown of thorns Stabbing deeper every day She cries out to me But I’m too busy Fighting off the ones Pounding in the nails Where do I begin To make you understand? It’s not the broken road behind you It’s the fact that you’re still pressing on My angel wears no halo Doesn’t need light to shine Flash forward through the years Empty, save our hands clamped together Standing ever vigilant Guarding each other In the stead of absent angels Just as, for each other We provide our own personal Heaven Where do I begin To make you understand? It’s not the broken road behind you It’s the fact that you’re still pressing on My angel wears no cross around her neck Too busy with the one on her back She cries out to me “Don’t give up on me You’re the only one who can mend the world around me” As the tears stream down my face I relinquish her from the burden Let me carry it a while Just take my hand Just take my hand Where do I begin To make you understand? It’s not the broken road behind you It’s the fact that you’re still pressing on My angel wears no halo
