Cancer and Courage

hundreds of cancers
invade humans like creeping ivy
spreading, climbing and vining uncontrollably
I have lost family and friends
to cancers that have metastasis to distant places
that are aggressive and invasive and out of control
each person's journey is unique
but one thing that holds true in each case I have seen
is the person's courage
recently, my uncle died
of bone cancer and it was horrible
it swept through him like an ivy gone wild
my cousin died of brain cancer
she fought until nothing in her thrived anymore
but her courage right to the end will forever shine
I lost a friend to breast cancer
she always said from the very beginning that she would
" beat this," she didn't
