Call From Seattle- 1990

Thirty-six years ago, at three a.m., our telephone rang loudly, waking me. From faraway Seattle to New York, my son announced these words, I won't forget. “Good morning, Mom, you are a Grandma now!” I then envisioned him the best I could as he described his curls, good weight, and length- I sensed the smell of his sweet powdered head. For this dear phone call made to me this day, would shape the awesome phases of my life. My son announced some words, I won't forget! “Good morning, Mom, you are a Grandma now!” and set the stage for all that was to come- a first-time Grandma- me at fifty-one. I chose this event for the contest because, in 1990, our son and his wife were Captains in the US Army, stationed in Seattle, WA. Due to the distance, we had not seen them in a while. To receive this moment was amazing because it really confirmed that we were first-time grandparents. The lines that were the hardest to write “One small physical detail most people would overlook.” (I chose “curls”). “One sensory detail- sound, smell, texture, temperature, etc.” (I chose “powdered head”). From my first draft, I removed any further details about our grandkids that the future provided.
