California Sunrise
I woke up rested this morning
And kinda excited too
Sending out text notifications to
A few friends for a review.
One in particular from so far away
I spoke with at length.
A few hours ahead in time
He spoke to me in the future
As I spoke to him in the past.
Miles transformed to inches
As the airwaves joined our connection.
We greeted one another
With instantaneous smiles.
We exchanged stories about everyday life.
It was still dark and raining in his world
As we talked he was mid commute
On his way to work,
I was just getting my day started.
Sharing mutually described
Country-like residential areas.
He, living on farmland's edge,
A vast and open space.
I, within walking distance of
Black Angus, dairy and horse farms,
With a few sticks in between.
We share commonalities
And a 25+ year friendship
That's showing no signs of ending.
I told him of the time when I inherited chickens
From my neighbor across the street
When they moved away.
To me they were more like pets
So I gave them all names.
They followed me wherever I went.
Even to the new neighbor who moved
Into the same house
From whence they came.
He laughed while I reminisced.
As reflections of taillights
Dance inside the cab of his truck
And across his face,
The sky slowly illuminated
With lighter hues of blue
As time cruised by until
He reached his destination.
He wasn't without company,
So as our conversation ends bitter sweet
But with thanks and pleasantries,
I thought back all the while
As I watched him drive along,
Through the power of technology,
We had shared our first California sunrise.
