California Evenings
The sun is setting,
Over the ocean,
Hidden, now,
By long, thin clouds.
The sky is laced,
With brilliant streaks,
Of pink, orange, red, and blue,
Fading into the darkening east.
The ocean is a deeper blue,
Than any I have ever known,
almost purple, it seems,
Against the orange sky.
Palm trees are swaying,
In the salt-tanged breeze,
Their greens, browns, and greys,
Vibrant in the sunset hues.
Seagulls soar in the golden hues,
Dark shapes with lonesome cries,
Heralding the coming night,
High above the white-capped waves.
