By the river Piedra I sat and wept
By the river Piedra I sat and wept
By the river Piedra I sat down and wept,
With secrets and sorrows too heavy to be kept.
In six short nights, my life somersaulted,
And all of my plans were suddenly halted.
You have grown to a stalwart with lurking eyes,
And I am here with my swollen eyes.
After all these years, "Why now?" I asked,
"Why seek a future that might not last?"
"Why can't it be now?" you retorted,
"Why live in the shadows of years we’ve aborted?"
"I have loved you," I said, "under heaven’s firmament,
While you were in the monastery, seeking refinement."
You were sophisticated, yet you chose me,
But I was so confined, and I still doubt what you see.
"Am I just your distraction?" I asked you,
While clearly you are my heart's destination.
I asked, "Did my love keep you back from your mission?"
You said, "Love is the light that strengthens our vision."
They say you can heal;
Will you reclaim the heart that you dared to steal?
You perceived the feminine face of God,
While I hid my own face, feeling lost and so odd.
You promised to be my Joseph,
Yet I know I am not the Maria for you.
With a desperate heart and a spirit apart,
I turn from the engine's heat;
And you are there,
To heal my heart's despair.
