Butterfly Dreams

Might butterflies have thoughts, have dreams? I doubt that man can know Though beautiful to see in flight They hatch where flowers grow And not to please the eye of one That's merely passing by Reminding him of passion's dance Mute fireworks, distant sky. Are colors all that draw them in Does nectar have a link? Is sweetness by itself a draw That doesn't fill a sink, Bereft of color still have pull, A fragrance that it owns, Or value that's more limited A 'white noise' blend of tones? Most butterflies take meals through straws They join with after birth! I gasp to share in Nature's awes, The miracles of Earth! 'Proboscis' it rolls up, unrolls To plumb a plume's display, Where nectar hides from dawn's patrols, That swells in Spring's foreplay. If you have had such thoughts as these The truth is Science knows And shares with us that butterflies Both smell and taste with toes! Was I surprised to hear this fact! They smell before they see, And scent hits other notes as well, A fragrant symphony! Long Tooth July 7th in 2019
