But Why Lord
But why, Lord? Why do we suffer so?
Why must the innocent reap what they don’t sow?
Why bear the weight of sins before our birth,
Punished for shadows we never put to earth?
Why do we reach, and still our hands come bare?
Why do we lose what our hearts need most to care?
Why does every love we plant end in thorns and rain?
Why does hatred root while kindness dies in pain?
Why, Lord, this line drawn in skin and name?
Why does the color of us spark the fire of shame?
Why must we beg for water, pay for air,
For a world You gave us yet we’re told “not fair”?
Why must we dig to find the gift inside,
While others feast and we are left outside?
Why is one table full and one table bare?
Why does one child laugh while one gasps for air?
Why do the wicked rise and seem to stay?
Why do the righteous fall and fade away?
Why is sickness swift, and healing slow?
Why is happiness a seed so hard to grow?
Oh God, I’m asking not in doubt, but need
To understand the soil where all these questions feed.
I see the devil laughing in the green,
I see Your children hungry, unseen.
But even here, Lord, in the dark I pray:
If suffering is the road, then walk it with me today.
If love is hard to find, then teach my heart to see
That maybe all these “whys” are leading me to Thee.
So I’ll lay my questions down, not to pretend they’re gone,
But to trust the One who holds both dusk and dawn.
For if the rich and poor must drink from the same rain,
Then let Your mercy fall and wash away the pain.
Amen. And still why, Lord? And still I trust.
